Tiger Trap - Supreme Nothing

Go Sailor - I just Do

I came to know and became a fan of Rose Melberg from her DIY all-girls fun group Tiger Trap (the name comes from Calvin and Hobbes), which I often play on my radio show on KFSR 90.7FM, back in the day!

What I love about Tiger Trap is that all their songs (from all three singles/EPs they’ve released) is that they’re short, they’re cute, and Melberg’s twittery vocals. Even though the term “twee” (I hate that word) existed since the 80s, I have often thought that Tiger Trap were pioneers of modernday twee-pop.

Melberg would continue her unique songs with Go Sailor and The Softies, sort of simultaneously in 1994. Between the two projects, it was obvious which one seem more important, since Go Sailor quickly went away after only three singles.

The Softies (Melberg’s collaboration would be with Jen Sbragia) was more significant, releasing four albums, their last one being Holiday in Rhode Island, available from K Records. The thing about The Softies, is that they were going for that two-vocals harmony thing and their songs are often pretty mellow… unlike their punk-counterpart with the same name (I think they were from the UK).

Since I left the radio station in the mid-90s, I will admit to not keeping up with the whereabouts of Rose Melberg and her various projects (working as a drummer in another short-lived band, Gaze, working with Elliott Smith, The Potatomen, etc). I did know she went solo, or at least had solo records, but I was still surprise to find out that Rose Melberg is back with her third studio album, Homemade Ship, released last Tuesday on K Records.

I was actually pretty excited to listen to the new album, but since my only knowledge of her music were pre-1996, it seems a lot more mellow acoustic than even the softiest Softies music. In fact, with all the background vocals by Larissa Loyva, one could mistaken Homemade Ship to be the latest Softies album.

The album seems very personal to me, especially on “Sidewalk” and “Old Days”. But I also get the impression that Melberg must really love two other things in life: nature and animals.

In the form of nature, she seems obsessed with water (”we watch the water float you“), moon, wind, ships, and sailing. As for animals, she just doesn’t just write about them, but often singing that she is an animal (”Bear in a Cave”, “Sharks”, crows on “Old Days”, raccoon on “Moon Singer”).

In some ways, the title track, “Homemade Ship”, about being lost due to instruments failure, is my favorite song, because I feel as if Melberg simply isn’t singing about sailing, but more about life and where she is.

If you were hoping for the new record to sound like Tiger Trap or Go Sailor, you will be disappointed. If you’re already comfortable with The Softies, then I think you’ll feel right at home with this very quiet and tender Homemade Ship album.

Can’t get enough of Melberg? Head over to NPR to hear “Old Days” as the Song of the Day for August 19th. Pick up Homemade Ships at K Records (LP for $10, cheap!).

The sound quality is really good, it seems to have been taken from a radio broadcast. The origin…
(500) Days of Summer is a romantic comedy movie that was released on limited screens in the US a few weeks ago. Although based on the trailer (yes, I am judging a film by its commercial), it looks very indie and very chick-flicky… I’m sure I’ll love it, but it seems like I will be renting this a heart-warming love story and secretly crying to myself in the dark instead of in public.

(500) Days of Summer is a movie about love, sure, but it’s also a movie about music. These songs build bridges between Tom and Summer and they tear them down. They can make you dance and they can make you cry. They describe how we feel and express emotions that just couldn’t get out any other way. Music is the soul of this movie.

You know, they had me at The Smiths, who appears on the soundtrack with two songs (plus a bonus Smiths cover by She & Him). It definitely sparked my interest. I’m happy to report that I have the album for review, and it seems to be a great mixture of 80s modern rock with, er, 00s modern rock.

Of course, I’m familiar with all bands on the soundtrack, most of these songs I already have on various albums. Particularly, I’m keen on the old stuff. I mean who can say no to Hall & Oates‘ “You Make My Dreams” as you picture Daryl Hall’s legs flapping. Or just give into Morrissey as he whines “Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Pease, Please, Please, No Really Please Let Me Get What I Want”. Or reflecting on a time of innocence with Simon & Garfunkel’s sweet and harmless “Bookends”.

If there is a theme on this soundtrack, it’s that these are all love
songs. While as usual, the more established alternative acts (Regina Spektor, Feist, Wolfmother) does a great job with their love songs, the unknown artists (at least to me) on this compilation actually does a great job introducing themselves to me. I was particularly impressed with “She’s Got You High” by Mumm-Ra (are they named after the Thundercats’ arch-nemesis? If so: AWESOME).

As a cover lover, I noticed there are two on the album. As I previously mentioned, “Please….” by She & Him does an excellent job with the cover, although it sounds pretty much like the original. Singer Zooey Deschanel does not bother changing the lyrics from a male’s perspective (and there’s no hint of desperation in her vocals) and M Ward does his best Johnny Marr jangly guitar. No problem here, it’s just that I’ve heard this before.

My absolute favorite is The Pixies’ “Here Comes Your Man” by Meaghan Smith (official/myspace). She re-interpreted the song as a slower-based song with male backup singers. There’s just something really sweet about the song when it’s slowed down from the original.

The really weird wild-card in this bunch is current-spouse of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Italian model-turned-singer, Carla Bruni. To be fair, she’s been releasing music since 2002, and her acoustic-folk French song, “Quelqu’un m’a dit” does a nice job as areak between all the English-based songs.

It should be interesting to see where the soundtrack play in the movie, so let me know if you see (500) Days of Summer. The romantic comedy movie is currently playing at selected theaters near you, while the soundtrack is available now via the great Sire Records. There’s always Amazon and iTunes (iTunes version includes the actors singing “Sugar Town”, “Here Comes Your Man” and “At Last”).

Trivia: The movie will be released in Australia on October 1st, where the soundtrack actually have two Aussie bands: The Temper Trap and Wolfmother.

Being a huge Morrissey/The Smiths fan, people often ask me: “What’s your favorite Morrissey song?…
To say the least, Morrissey is the main reason why I listen to alternative music. Prior Morrissey, I was hoplessly in love with Chynna from Wilson Phillips. What made me deflect to the dark side was seeing Morrissey’s black humor as he sings his heart out to “There is a Place in Hell for Me and My Friends” on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

I bought everything I could from BMG music club. I still think it’s a great deal, you get 4 CDs for the cost of “shipping” - which usually works out to be about $4 a CD. BMG had a back catalogue of only some Smiths albums (they were missing albums like Meat is Murder and Rank to name a few) and only two Morrissey albums, Viva Hate and Bona Drag (the latter is more or less a compilation).

When those few albums wasn’t enough for me, I sought out singles, collecting cover artwork, fanzines, and bootlegs. I suppose it shouldn’t surprise anyone that I can get a bit obsessive.

Just to let you know, for the sake of being faithful and for collecting, I still buy his singles. I no longer try and get all different version of a ‘greatest hits’ album or anything. For instance, I think there’s a new Smiths greatest hits out, which I’ll be ignoring… although there’s always this nagging voice in the back of my mind to ‘complete’ the collection, you know?

Okay, for those still awake, Morrissey’s latest album is called Years of Refusal. If you are only familiar with the ‘mopey’/depressing Morrissey of those Smiths days, I have to warn you that this album is very muscular and agressive. There is, of course, the odd sad song (”You Were Good In Your Time”), but they are quite outnumbered on this album.

You might have seen his “All You Need Is Me” tongue-in-cheek answer to all your woes or have heard “That’s How People Grow Up” on his last Greatest Hits album (that song was a brand new song at the time). The new “hit” single from this album is “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”, which sounds sweeping. I don’t know how to describe it, it sounds like the song should be epic, but it’s wrapped up in a two minute pop song. Typical Morrissey to end the song with “nobody wants my love“.

I really enjoyed the opening and closing songs (”Something Is Squeezing My Skull” and “I’m Ok By Myself”), they seem like fitting bookends to a great novel. The first song is just a fast song with an amusing Morrissey lyric of “don’t give me anymore“. The last song was co-written by Jesse Tobias, who is a semi-new collaborator. The rest of the album are written by old band rockabillish members, Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer, they’ve been with Morrissey since 1991.

Morrissey is definitely a more modern and mature musician since The Smiths… and easily his most poppiest album to date. New fans will be delighted, old fans may not really like. But you know they are going to buy it anyway, so it doesn’t really matter what I say…. although I will have to say this album is much, much, better than his last one, Ringleader of the Tormentors .

You can find Years of Refusal at any record store. If you can’t find it, then you are shopping at the wrong record store. Fans should be sure to only get the deluxe edition with bonus DVD.

Look for Julia Riley if you’re going to attend a show. I will at the Minneapolis show, so come say hi.

As a special bonus, here are some Morrissey songs I’ve previously mentioned:

Morrissey - Reader Meet Author

Morrissey - The National Front Disco

Morrissey - Sunny

Morrissey - Girl Least Likely To

Morrissey - Jack The Ripper (live)

Morrissey - Boxers

Morrissey - Piccadilly Palare

Morrissey - That’s How People Grow Up

Morrissey - Jack the Ripper (studio)

Morrissey - Tomorrow (Single Mix)
UPDATE 3/6/09: I got this amusing note:

A Note From Morrissey on Tour of Refusal

“I have survived the interrogation of Atlanta’s Immigration officials and Myrtle Beach shall have me tonite (Friday), and the world from then onwards … if the world can take it. One of the many penalties of being human is that tours often take a military push to start, well, all of our answers will be in our songs tomorrow night. The bloodbath starts at 7.30. Life is testing you out. Be ready for anything.”

[2009] Oohs & Aahs
Say Hi To Your Mom, or currently now known as simply Say Hi, is an lo-fi indie rock band from Seattle, Washington. They have been quietly and consistantly releasing their charming little music since 2002 with equally clever titles (and not to mention multiple syllables) and lo-fi cover artwork (all pastel colors with black and white drawings).

They’ve been pretty constant because the music and direction are from mostly one person: Eric Ellbogen. He writes and records his music, usually at home on his mac. Well their latest album is called Oohs & Aahs and it was just released last Tuesday, March 3rd, through Barsuk Records.

I managed to listen to the album three times, as I’m writing this, so it’s a really short, but sweet, album. Sweet songs includes organ-sounding “Audrey” and “The Stars Just Blink For Us”. Ellbogen’s vocals reminds me of lazy-man Strokes singer, Julian Casablancas, on these songs.

“November Was White, December Was Grey” was the lead single/song that they released in anticipation to this album, which had great a right-only speaker guitar playing, but forgettable. His singing on this one had a lot of breathing too, which I didn’t really enjoy. If you don’t believe me, you can download the song yourself via Spin.com. The only good news is that Winter is almost gone here… and yes, I’ll feel a lot better once Winter’s gone.

My favorite song on the album is quite upbeat. It’s called “One, Two … One” and it’s just one of those songs that I can just play over and over again. The low quality guitar and percussions makes it very simple to dance and groove to.

Plus clapping is always a bonus!

Overall, these songs are short pop songs, with analog/mono homemade sound quality - that’s endearing and personal. They are setting out on tour to promote this album for 2009, so be sure to check them out if they’re touring your area. I may try and catch them at SXSW, but since they’re returning to Minneapolis in April, it will be no big deal if I miss them in all the SXSW madness.

You can buy all of Say Hi’s records via our favorite record label or online at amazon.

Tracy Shedd

September 20, 2008 – 11:37 pm by sleeper
Tracy Shedd is releasing her third album, Cigarettes & Smoke Machines, this Tuesday, and I will confess that I’m smitten with her sweet voice. Her voice is as pretty as her looks, which surprised me when I read that in her early albums that she deliberately hid her lovely voice behind musical shrouds. With Cigarettes & Smoke Machines, it’s her voice that is in the forefront.

So, I get the impression that earlier in her career, she loves (or would enjoy) the three colors Kieslowski movies (Blue, White, and Red).

Let’s take a look at the cover art, first of all. The cover does not feature Shedd, it’s actually one of her friends from 1996 named Emily Wilder, photographed by Amanda Sciullo. The cover is of a girl in blindfolds, and appearently Shedd had wanted to use this image for a cover - and finally used it with Cigarettes & Smoke Machines.

“Never Too Late” starts off the album with this tone that anything can happen, that it’s never too late. The album then become a little more frantic with the guitar on “Whatever It Takes”. It’s a little faster and direct, and I can see why they chose this song for their promotional music video. After watching the video, it seems to translate literally what the song is about - an angry/jealous woman and her boyfriend/husband.

[2004] Louder Than You Can Hear

[2008] Cigarettes & Smoke Machines
The pianos, bass, percussion, and cello, are all there in the background, while the strength lies in the guitar and her voice. It would seem that whoever arranged this album did a pretty good job, keeping you interested. For example, I felt that some of the songs are laid out in a slow/quiet and then followed by a faster/uptempo song. I know that sounds incredibly formulatic, but it works for me.

So let’s break down the tracks:

1. Never Too Late
[Y]
2. Whatever It Takes
[G]
3. Hardest Part Of Good-Bye
[R]
4. Won Past Ten
[G]
5. Plastic World
[R]
6. Not Giving Up
[G]
7. Remember The Time We Set The Highway On Fire?
[Y]
8. Go On
[G]
9. Paris
[R]
10. Valentine
[R]
11. So Sick
[G]
12. Home
[R]

I will have to say that I am a fan of the more faster song, as I felt like I should be dancing to these little stories that Shedd is singing about…. However, “Paris” has a nice spacing and pacing.

Cigarettes & Smoke Machines will be available this Tuesday, September 23rd, on Teenbeat Records. Be sure to check some of their other bands, including The Rondelles and The Feminine Complexe.

Let me throw out some numbers to impress you: 10 million records sold, 5 consecutive UK #1 albums, 4 Grammy Awards….. The Chemical Brothers needs no introduction. (Be sure to check my previous Chemical Brothers article for We Are the Night if you do need an introduction.)

Their second greatest hits album, Brotherhood (the first was Singles 93-03), they prove they are still the big beat techno kings with two brand new tracks, “Midnight Madness” and “Keep My Composure”. I was doubtful, at first, for the new tracks, because I felt the intro to “Keep My Composure”, was weak - however the song quickly turn amazing when Spank Rock did more rapping. “Composure” feels like “Galvanize”, a mix between beats and rap - a sound that the Brothers seems to be heading towards.

Those are the two stand-out new tracks, but we shouldn’t ignore the other 12 greatest hits tracks. Some of their best known songs are on here - unfortunately my favorite song, “Life Is Sweet”, isn’t on here. This is understandable because if you listen to their debut album, the song doesn’t really have an ending (it just morphs into “Playground for a Wedgeless Firm”).

I personally think that they are also known for their amazing music videos, with some of the most memorable video moments like the girl that keeps seeing skeletons (”Hey Boy Hey Girl”), a couple on the run from the law (”Block Rockin’ Beats”), a singing fish (”The Salmon Dance”), that amazing train ride (”Star Guitar), etc. If you haven’t seen their music videos, you need to do yourself a favor and look them up on youtube or something.

Brotherhood comes in two formats: a standard 15-track release and a deluxe package (which I recommend for fans), which comes with a bonus disc. The bonus disc contains 10 “Electronic Battle Weapons” tracks - these songs were available available on ultra rare DJ-White labels, but for the first time it’s publically available with this release. Although it’s kind of neat to hear some of the standard beats and loops that the Brothers use in their sets, I felt you had to be pretty big hardcore trance/dance fans to really appreciate this. After a while, forgive me for say, but it sounded all the same to me. It’s still good though, like something you would put on when you’re cleaning the house.

The package also comes with lyric book containing all the singles cover artwork, but in duo-tones colors (like silkscreening art), and one postcard showing them on stage at Glastonbury.

If you’re a Chemical Brothers fan, you definitely need to pick this album up, if only for the two new songs, but the package is pretty sweet. Brotherhood is available now from Astralwerks.

Here are a few non-indie rock album reviews for you. One of the nicest thing about W♥M is that we don’t necessary serve a niche music genre, so we’re often sent a huge variety of music genre. Below are some genre of music that I don’t normally listen to - but all equally enjoyable: oldies, reggae, death metal, and Christian.

OPM
opmden.com
myspace.com

California’s OPM’s Golden State of Mind was released in August, and features a diverse collaborations with Jim Perkins (acoustic folk), Pato Banton (reggae), Big B (rap/hip hop) and Jamie Allensworth (soul/funk).

This album is mostly chill reggae, but with a small splash of rap - mostly through collaboration with Big B & Dirtball. This is also radio-reggae, so if you’re looking for reggae dubs, you might want to look elsewhere - however fans of reggae should really enjoy the mix of rock, rap, reggae (and even punk!).

This band first exploded on the reggae scene with their major label (Atlantic) debut 2000 album, Menace To Sobriety, mostly due to their popular skater song, “Heaven Is a Halfpipe”.

They left Atlantic and have been with Suburban Noize Records since 2004.

The one clear song that I think is such a good song is “Family & Friends”. There are two mixes on this album, the Saber mix seems to stress certain music riffs/beats, but the original mix I thought was just fine - if not better as is. I think mostly because you can hear the vocals more clearly on the original mix.

It looks like they’ve been touring all summer long, and continuing:

You probably don’t know this, but I often get interested potential writers with interesting proposals for music angles. One of them included someone who wanted to write about Christian music, so I requested some of this genre of music from our PR people. When it came to actually producing reviews, that person was never heard from again.

I haven’t gotten a Christian album in a while, but this one recently turned up: the self-titled album by the artist simply known as “Stephanie”.

Surely she must know that she’s not the only musician called Stephanie? I had a heck of a hard time looking up her myspace/website.

With the exception of the live recording of “Wake up Arise”, all of these songs are studio-recorded and mixed. It sounds very clear and professional - including the live song.

The closest “rock” song is the ironically named “Back to the Rock”, featuring pianos and Céline Dion-style singing and wooing. I did enjoy her songs when it had more than a few instrument arrangement, like “The Rain”, “Through Christ” (electric guitar!), and “Back to the Rock”, as they seem to bring more of a full-music experience for me - at least for this album.

I can understand the route to keep it simple (either with just pianos or acoustic guitar), because I felt they were trying to spotlight Stephanie’s vocals. If you like vocals and minimal music, songs to check out are “Now I Know”, “Bless Those Beside Me”, and “Take Away”.

The overall feel of this album is that it’s Christian pop music, at times inspirational. If you enjoy other Christian pop acts like Amy Grant, this should fit right in. After a few listen, you forget that it’s even Christian, despite the obvious religious overtones.

If you’re in the Texas area and just generally like pop music, you should check her out:

THE PONSONBY DC’S

This band doesn’t have anything to do with death, sans for their gloomy “Death Doom and Destruction”. This song is actually pretty good, sampling some speech from George Bush.

This band have been around since 1984 (WTF!) and currently based out of Canterbury, New Zealand, according to their myspace.

By 1986, this band was in top form with their self-titled album featured in Spin Magazine and all over the college radio airwaves.

Their sixth and latest album is called That’s What All The Girls Say, released this year. Just look at their cover art, featuring what looks like a “serious” Cubism style - yet showing a pop-art style of a boat captain to the right. Maybe I’m over analyzing it, but this has a very serious and a not-so-serious tone to it.

This also reflects in their songs, some songs have modern social commentaries to them, like the “Death” song mentioned above to “Pluto’s Not A Planet Anymore”. Other songs (”Son of a Street Fighting Man”, “Girls!”) are just fun.

Other trends I notice from this band is that they have a late 50s “oldies but goodies” feel to them. Check out “Little Baby You’re Mine” and “Ponsonby Waltz”, both are well worth a look if you love classic oldies songs - done by a modern band.

PS, Gavin Buxton’s NZ accent definitely shows up on “Just Another Kick” and “Son of a Street Fighting Man”. I love it!

NETHERBIRD

Since we already mentioned the life-inspiration songs of Stephanie, I thought it would be fun to balance it with a little bit of the Dark Side. Usually I reserve this sort of music for Dr Soup, as this is a death (read: Satan) metal band from Sweden.

I was actually pretty impressed with the production on this album, it doesn’t sound too “cookie monster” but it’s clear that their inspiration lies in death metal. Even though I think some of their songs sounds like operatic metal (especially on “Carcess Symphony”).

I thought “Forever Mournful” was the stand-out track on this album - and I’ll tell you why. You have Nephente’s demonic/agonizing vocals (I’m not even sure what he’s saying!!) with a counterpoint of a sweet, angelic voice (no idea who’s singing as the promo copy I have doesn’t have any liner notes). The song lends itself to an epic feel as its theme seem to flow right into “Adrift Towards Eternity” (with its sweet violins and thunderstorm soundclip).

Speaking of epic, check out “Boulevard Black” - the very first song that Netherbird recorded. This is a fourteen minute, ultizing lots of guitar, bird sounds (crows?), pianos, and includes a semi-cheesy voice over that seems to sound like an old 80s horror movie. Even the reprise song have a feel of Phantom of the Opera with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre!

The most surprising thing I found out is that Target.com is carrying their CD. Wow, right? Apparently there is a standard release and a collector’s edition - as usual, I always suggest getting the deluxe version if you can swing it.

Set List Arcadia Cafe, Minneapolis (09/04/08)

The Arcadia sits across the 400 Bar, but you wouldn’t know it was called the Acadia as the signage reads “RIVERSIDE”. I’ve seen this place from the outside through its numerous large windows and looking in at the band on stage.

I don’t know how often these “Diverse Emerging Music Organization” (DEMO) shows goes on, but they seem to operate on donations and benefits local artists. I caught the last few songs of Backstories, a full band and all nicely dressed. I don’t really know the band’s back stories (haha), I’ll bet they get that a lot. They have some songs available for download on their myspace.

Eli Ratner said it was his first time playing (I thought he meant his first gig ever), but I guess he meant at the Acadia. He seems really comfortable on stage with his acoustic guitar. It would seem, according to his myspace, that he’s normally a duo with Peter VonDeLinde.

It’s clear that the real star is Leerone, who earlier in the day appeared in St Paul’s Station 4. The report I got was that her keyboard “got messed up” and she ended up renting a full Yamaha keyboard.

Her set was understandably short, lasting no more than 45 minutes, and included a “made up” acapella song that’s not written on the set list.

PS, more details later, including pictures and art.

W♥M Updates (September 2008)

September 4, 2008 – 3:10 am by Administrator

Love Psychedelico - Standing Bird

The Valley Girl’s swanky new hair

I can’t believe September is already here.

Appearing tomorrow at the Temple Bar is Love Psychedelico, who we’ve previously mentioned a few times on W♥M.

It’s too insane, this band sold out the 14,201 seated Nippon Budokan in Japan - several times, I might add - and the lucky people in Los Angeles gets to see them in an intimate setting.

Find out more details about the gig on our news.w♥m and their official (US) and myspace.

Also, tomorrow I’m supposed to be around for a free show at the Acadia Cafe to see singer/songwriter Leerone. I believe earlier tomorrow she will also be at Station 4 in St Paul for the “Concert for Change Festival”. The republican convention happening in St Paul is just coincidental.

You can find details of her other appearances on her website or the ’space.

One last announcement: many of you probably don’t know that I am a closet comic book fan. I am the creator of the almost-ten years george-perez.com and I got the announcement that Perez was involved in an auction to help save and preserve “the Superman House”. It’s all over the news, but I thought I’d mention it here as I feel strongly about it. You can read all about it on ordinarypeoplechangetheworld.com

By the way, the most interesting item in the auction is a hand-written draft of Neil Gaiman’s upcoming book. It’s currently at $530, way above my budget.

In actual W♥M news: the podcast is going strong!!
Stronger than ever.

I’m pleased to announce the re-appearance of former W♥M writer Valley Girl on this Sunday’s podcast. Now that I’ve embarrassed her, I can guarantee another awesome dudecast.

Also, I have just added radioexile.com to news.weheartmusic.com. If you have a blog and/or website and would like to be on our link roll, just send me an email.

OH! Also, as a favor, I ‘investigated’ wordpress using a free version via weheartmusic.blogsome.com. I spent a lot of time looking its codes and I can tell you that if you ever want to customize your WP blog, you will need to really understand how CSS works. CSS have really replaced the original html, in my opinion. It’s very flexible and it’s also easier to understand.

My first impression is that it’s half-manual and half-automatic. WYSIWYG doesn’t always work, even with some of the best plugins… and if you really want to do make splashy posts, you still need to hand-code things (much like how I compose all my posts prior to putting it on vox).

I also like the ability to create users and “comment approvals”. There’s a lot of cool stuff, but you know, for new users, I would have to recommend them to check out vox and sites.google.com. I’m not afraid to admit that WP is too complicated.

[Sep 2007] Love and Paranoia

I was going to have Australian Sally take up writing Regurgitator’s triumph return to music with their sixth album, Love and Paranoia - but I just found out that it’s released today, September 2nd (out in the UK yesterday), because they are doing a mini-tour of the UK. I am assuming if things are successful, they will eventually tour the US to promote the album.

Regurgitator - !

Regurgitator - I Suck a Lot of Cock to Get Where I am

Regurgitator - Everyday Formula

Regurgitator - Magnetic

I previously have mentioned the ‘Gurge before, regarding their most famous album, Unit. The album won ARIA Award for Album of the Year that the record company (Warner Music Australia) went back and re-released it as Unit Reboot.

The band is fairly well known in Brisbane, Australia, down to their “secret origin” of the original three band members (Quan Yeomans, Ben Ely, and Martin Lee) meeting on a public bus in Brisbane, Australia.

The band was never popular in the US, despite their previous domestic efforts with Sub Pop’s difficult title “I Suck a Lot of C*** to Get Where I Am” or on Reprise Records.

I obviously haven’t kept up with Regurgitor, they had change so much from their beginning. With Love and Paranoia recorded in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in the Summer of 2007.

Starting off the album with “Blood and Spunk”, which is very 80s-sounding (think Kraftwerk or Devo). I can see why this single got them a ton of airplay on Australia’s Triple J, especially with its catchy “just let yourself go go go go go go” chorus. The song is a perfect three-minute pop dance song, that’s all there is to it.

I can see Regurgitator’s oh-so-ironic humor on songs like “Drinking Beer Is Awesome!”, “Destroy This Town”, and “Romance of the Damned”. Speaking of “Romance of the Damned”, this is the new single, and features new fourth keyboardist girl Seja Vogel on vocals. It’s pretty catchy and humorous. I love the “google” reference in the song, too nerdy!

Old fans might not like the addition of Vogel on vocals (she also sings on “Magnetic”), but I think she’s actually pretty good! She has a very Humans League quality to her voice.

The last song on this album is a weird Yeomans vocals on “Armageddon Premonition”. The vocals is obviously manipulated to sound like a robot with synth. I did enjoy this little experiment and the song left me wanting more.

If you love 80s synth and pop, you need to check out Love and Paranoia, it comes highly recommended by me. The album is available now (amazon is listing a ridiciously expensive price for a domestic version) and if you’re lucky enough to be in the UK, be sure to check them out on a few tour dates.
